Eating With Thao

Hello friends! My name is Thao Nguyen and welcome to Eating With Thao. I was born in Vietnam and moved to the U.S. when I was 9 years old. It was definitely one of the toughest periods in my life as it was difficult not having familiar faces around and having to adjust to a new lifestyle. It was my mom’s home cooked meals that helped me get through those challenging times. This experience instilled in me that food is my connection to family, friends, community and beyond.

I greatly enjoy cooking, creating and sharing recipes. For me, it all really started with a deliciously fried egg. Rice, egg, and ice cream are the three food items that I love and could easily eat every single day for the rest of my life. Yes, every single day! I also love going grocery shopping as it allows me to pick the local and seasonal ingredients I want to cook with. The kitchen is my happy place, creative space, and outlet to relieve stress. I’m content by simply being able to pick up a knife and chop away or pan frying a mixture of ingredients with my chopsticks. My heart is overjoyed when I see my family and friends devour the food that I cook.

Aside from eating and cooking, I love to explore the Pacific Northwest and travel to new countries. I take pleasure in going on day hikes and overnight backpacking trips. Below are some photos of my hiking trips. As you can see, I packed rice and scrambled eggs into a reusable container for a quick snack after reaching the mountain top. That’s how much I love rice and egg, haha! I appreciate that each hike has its own unique charm and beauty although they may have similar surroundings and sceneries. It reminds me of the fact that each unique dish has its own version in different countries and that food is our common denominator. With that said, I am thrilled to share my kitchen adventures with you!
